10 MOTIVATING WORKOUT SONGS FOR WHEN YOU CAN’T EVEN

I’m the biggest I have ever been. Bigger then three months after I had Lolo, when I thought I was the biggest I have ever been…So, this year, now I’m breastfeeding free with a better handle of the kids’ routines, I’ve been hitting the gym. Armed with my bottle of water and headphones, it’s my Spotify Gym playlist that keeps me going, which is why I thought I’d share my top 10 motivating workout songs to help you keep up the sweat.

Are you ready to work up a sweat with my motivating workout songs?

You see, motivation is the key to keeping you on your fitness path. For me, going to the gym isn’t as easy as it used to be.  There’s the time, I can’t spend 1.5 hours four times a week honing my body anymore, I have 1 hour max 2 times a week straight after the school run. I’m also a 30 something mum, who’s working her butt off making it happen in her freelance career, juggling family, home etc and generally sluggish.

However, music is the playlist to my life and easily affects my mood. At the gym, it is the ultimate personal trainer and motivator. So when I feel like quitting, my legs feel like jelly and my muscles are on fire, it’s these hard hitting, head banging choons, that get me pumped up, keep me peddling those final minutes and circuit rounds.

ONE.

M BEAT FEATURING GENERAL LEVY, INCREDIBLE

Big up to all my original junglist massive!  Don’t tell me you can listen to this Jungle Classic and not feel fired up. Every time it comes on, I’m literally transported to a massive arena full of ravers ready to dance all night.

Great for…Any cardio

TWO.

MC CREU, DANCA DO CREU

I first heard this in my Zumba class a few years ago and instantly fell in love with the heady and rich Brazilian Favela bass and rhythm. It’s got quite a melodic tempo and is pretty raunchy too. I’m sharing the non-official video, because the official video, is well – scandalous (shhh!)

Great for…Bike and weights

THREE.

AJ TRACEY, BUSTER CANNON

I never got into grime in it’s infancy, I didn’t like the serious vibe in the clubs compared to bubbly garage one. That doesn’t mean I don’t get it, I’m from South London after all. I remember the first time I heard this track.  The kids were sleeping in the back seat of the car with me listening to this full volume. If you wanna keep moving then this is the kind of hype grime tune to get you to your target.

Great for…cardio, weights, everything! This is hype!

FOUR

MICHAEL SEMBELLO, MANIAC

As a child of the 80s, I saw flashdance a lot, I’m not sure how, as I’ve seen it in more recent years and it’s pretty raunchy. None the less, this scene, when she works her butt off, always springs to mind when I hear it. This in turn inspires me to sweat it up!

Great for… weights

FIVE

TUPAC, HAIL MARY

I will never forget the moment I heard Tupac had died. I was walking to school listening to Kiss FM and bawling my eyes out. Now he did some grimy stuff, but this right here is the most grimy of all AND was used in Creed soundtrack. So when I play this, I feel pumped up like a boxer.

Great for…Walk to the gym (getting there can be hard enough right?) and weights

SIX.

FANNYPACK, HEY MAMI

I discovered the feisty 00s girl group Fannypack when I was living in New York well over 10 years ago. Their bass-filled classic ‘Hey Mami’ never felt so relevant until I became a mum and now I sing the lyrics ‘Hey Mami, you sexy, Hey mami, you beautiful’ to myself as I work out. It’s about self-love and speaking kind words to yourself ladies and nothing gets you through a few more reps then feeling sexy.

SEVEN.

LITTLE MIX, TOUCH

Well, you gotta have a proper girly pop song on your playlist. Back in my gym bunny days, it used to be Kylie and Britney Spears, but now the feel-good, cheerful vibes of this Little Mix track takes all the pain away and gets me moving.

Great for…Cardio

EIGHT.

CRYSTAL WATERS, GYPSY WOMAN (SHE’S HOMELESS)

Because, beacause, because because of the wonderful things soulful house music does. It makes you dance, it keeps you to the beat. You cannot have a motivating gym playlist without some 90s house on it. This song is my winner.

Great for…Circuits/ Weight Training

NINE.

BUSTA RHYMES, GIMME SOME MORE

Because when you have hip hop legend Busta Rhymes spitting “Gimme Some More” just when you’re about to throw in the towel, and the beat is grimy and the bass full. You’re gonna give him some more with everything you’ve got.

Great for…Cardio & Circuits

TEN.

SO SOLID CREW,  21 SECONDS

BOOOOOOO!!!!! This one’s for all my garage ravers, who like me were out 2-3 nights a week bubbling to garage. This So Solid anthem is massive and will keep those feet peddling and those arms pumping, until you realise… you’ve only ‘got 21 seconds to go’ to the finish line!

Great for…cardio and leaving the gym triumphantly!

So, these are my top 10. What are your top motivating workout songs?

  1. I’m not going to lie, I’ve not heard of half of these songs (out of the loop much?!?!) but I’m going to stick them into a playlist and see if I can’t get my oversized backside moving 😀 #dreamteam

  2. Ah I’ve only ever heard of 3 of these songs! Will have to give the others a listen when I next do a workout at home (with 3 kids I have neither the time nor money for the gym anymore) X

  3. Yay! Thanks for this lovely – I’ve just had a Little Mix moment in my kitchen haha. Love “Incredible” – it instantly took me back about 20 years to my days as an ice-skater. They used to bring this out for the “speed skate” session and we all had to skate ridiculously quickly in one direction whilst trying to look totally bad-ass! Great work out mix! Thanks for sharing with #DreamTeam x

  4. What a great mix of songs! I’m planning to start running and need to get my music sorted out for that so this is a good start, thanks 🙂 I feel so old though as this reminded me when ’21 seconds’ and ‘gimme some more’ came out 😉 xx

  5. That’s great you have a great list of workout songs. I totally get needing to listen to music I like at the gym. And listening to what’s on the gym speakers doesn’t cut it.

  6. Interesting playlist, I think there were 2 I had never heard before. These last few months I have been listening to my favorite podcasts during my workouts – it seems to work, go figure!
